Kasamba Women’s Group – Village banking initiative
The Kasanka Women’s Group was the initiative of a Peace Corps volunteer to engage women in sustainable activities that would empower them financially and provide them with some form of independence to improve their quality of life. The group activities have so far been focused on hand craft activities, such as baking and jewellery making, with KTL supporting them through their gift shop, allowing visitors during the bat season to discover their skills.
Due to lower tourist numbers throughout the rest of the year, the KWG have put in place a village bank saving programme that will sustain them until the next bat season. The primary objective of village banking is to provide assistance to individuals that are in extreme levels of poverty. Increased participation in local initiatives ensures that community members grow the capacity to pursue alternative livelihoods, as opposed to exploitative activities such as poaching or charcoal burning. The group is currently reviewing the constitution and we are so proud of their hard work and commitment.
